It was built following a devastating fire in 1875 that destroyed the family's wooden dwelling and a number of other buildings. The new dwelling was probably designed by George M. Wickersham. His sketch architectural drawings for the structure are in the Shaker manuscript collection at the Western Reserve Historical Society.
