K-7 1870, May 4 From William Cullen Bryant in New York to Edward Jr. as Consul in Hamburg: “My dear Mr. Robinson, I am truly and deeply grieved to hear of the death of my excellent friend your mother. I had thought of her as one who was yet to enjoy many years of a serene old age in the land of her birth and amid the affectionate cares of her children.....I heard of your mother’s death the day before I received your letter. A German gentleman called at the office to announce it, and I caused to be inserted in the Evening Post the article which I send you included.....”
