Printed: Connecticut Chronicles; A considerable Shaker settlement existed in Enfield, Connecticut, between 1780 and 1915. The Shakers were an unusual religious sect, so-called from their movements in dansing, which originally formed part of their worship. The Shakers made some notable contributions to American life. They were pioneers in the chair industry, and probably the first to make and use rocking chairs to any great extent. A chair like the one pictured here sold for one dollar in 1831. The Enfield colony sold the first packaged garden seeds in America in 1802, prior ro which their bulk seeds had enjoyed a high reputation for quality. They were also pioneers in the conservation of natural resources.;
