Dragon Boat Festival takes place on the fifth of May in lunar calendar each year. The magistrate is Qu yuan (343-278 BCE), a renowned Chinese poet and politician from Chu State in the Warring States Period. He was opposed to the collaboration between Chu State and Qin State; instead, he proposed that Chu Sate should work with Qi State to combat Qin State. However, the emporer of Chu State did not listen to him. Qu committed suicide when Qin State conquered the capital of Chu State. The people of Chu State adored Qu. Hence, they make Zongzi - a type of rice snack filled with pork or red beans and wrapped with loquat leaves - and throw them into the river to commemorate the soul of the poet. Gradually, Zongzi became a common food consumed on the Dragon Boat Festival.
